Port Moresby has historical sites. But little is known about them and you have to wonder why schools aren’t being taught about Port Moresby’s history. There are fascinating stories to tell and one particular question that has aways been on our minds is : what is the oldest building in town that is still standing.
Our question has been answered so here it is:
The Ela Church
The Ela Church or Ela United Church is the oldest building in Port Moresby and still stands. It is located at Douglas Street sitting beside the prestigious Grand Papua Hotel. It’s hidden and not many know of its historical significance but when you do, you appreciate the building more.
The Ela Church was built in 1890 and at the date of this article, it is 133 years old. Amazing isn’t it!
This little chapel was built by the town’s first overseas resident of the London Missionary Society (LMS) Dr. William G Lawes.
And here are some images of the oldest building in town: Images by Skerah

I think its great the government sees the important value in preserving early history like other countries. A great talking point, to be included on tourist itinerary list along with cultural attractions. Well done P.N.G.
A few mistakes in this article.
It is not located beside the Grand Papua Hotel. It was never there, but across the road from where the Grand Papua Hotel was eventually built.
And it was moved to Hanuabada about 7 years ago.
